MBSR class (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction)

What is MBSR?

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction was developed by Jon Kabat- Zinn Ph.D. over 40 years ago at UMass Memorial Hospital in Massachusetts. It is an intensive training in mindfulness meditation and mindfulness practices designed to reduce stress and the resulting symptoms, improve your overall health and wellbeing and enhance your life’s fulfillment and satisfaction.

The course is based on the premise that “there is more right with you than wrong with you”. However, most of us are on autopilot most of the day reacting to life’s challenges rather than responding skillfully. The MBSR course will develop the ability to cultivate more mindfulness (informed skillful choice) rather than mindlessness (autopilot/habitual response) – so that you are aware of where you are – what you are feeling and why you are doing what you are doing.

Participating in this course will reconnect you with your inner wisdom and deep knowing that already lives within you.

The course will include guided instruction in mindfulness meditation and practices, mindful movement (gentle yoga), walking meditation, inquiry and group sharing.

You will receive an email after each class with links to guided meditations and other homework and reading assignments.

How can participating in an MBSR course help me?

Participating in this course can provide an abundant array of benefits. What is going on in your life right now that is drawing you to explore mindfulness practices at this particular time in your life?

Here is a partial list of physical mental and emotional challenges that MBSR has been scientifically proven to help the treatment of and improve.

  • Mental/Emotional: Anxiety and panic attacks, depression, eating disorders, trauma, PTSD, sleep issues, concentration, and focus, overreactive/anger issues, relationship conflicts.
  • Physical Health: heart disease, hypertension, GI issues, skin disorders, headaches, and other types of chronic pain and illness.
  • Wellbeing: work, family and financial stress, creativity, greater life satisfaction, and fulfillment, ability to be fully present and engaged with your life.

What will be required of me?

The course is structured in 8 weekly 2 to 2 ½ hour sessions with a one-day silent retreat towards the end of the 8 weeks. You will be asked to engage in a daily mindfulness meditation practice as well as informal practices that incorporate mindfulness into what you are already doing in your daily life.

As Jon Kabat- Zinn says when asked about how to engage in mindfulness practice: “as if your life depends on it because it does!

To make substantial life changes is going to require your full participation and commitment. And understandably this can bring up scheduling and time constraint challenges. In the context of this course, it becomes a perfect opportunity to put into practice what you are learning, which includes practicing patience, kindness, curiosity, gentleness, and a whole lot of compassion for yourself.

Practicing mindfulness is a way of life, a way to live your life consciously, not just a strategy to relax or take away pain and discomfort.
