Fame and Reputation

I Ching trigram – Li – Clinging Fire

Element – Fire

Teaching – Everything is Connected

The teaching and energy of this Gua pertain to Clarity and your Inner Illumination. It also relates to your reputation within your community, work, family and circle of friends.

Whether your reputation is positive or negative, it will cling to you via others thoughts, feelings and memories, and experiences. It is important to be mindful about what kind of reputation you are cultivating. When it is positive, you will experience friendly, auspicious and synergistic connections in your life. Your life will be illuminated by the good will that you create around you. However, if you burn any bridges, that energy will follow you into the future. And what happens is that people who burn bridges often find themselves alone and without resources to fall back on in times of need.

This Gua is a fire element, and one of the teachings of Fame and Reputation is Clinging Fire – be mindful of what you are famous for because it will cling to you for a long time.

Here are some ways you can enhance the Fame and Reputation area:

Place symbols of accomplishments in this area; degrees, awards, diploma’s, certificates, trophies. Artwork or objects in fire element colors of the red spectrum; lighting and candles; photos or artwork of people and animals; leather, wool, fur, feathers; images, sayings, or quotes from people you admire and respect; triangular shapes; symbols or artwork that represents what you want to be known for.

Love, Marriage and Relationships

I Ching trigram – K’un – Receptive Earth

Element – Earth

Most Yin – Yielding

Teaching – Adaptability, openness, trust, unconditional love.

This part of the Bagua is so rich and deep in meaning. It relates to our intimate relationships, significant other, our life partner and how we thrive when both partners openly receive, support and celebrates each other’s individual expression.

The foundation for experiencing a healthy, happy and fulfilling relationship begins with loving yourself and fulfilling your own inner needs and dreams which can then open the door to creating a healthy intimate relationship. Receive the love from yourself the way you’d like to receive from another.

This area also relates to ALL of your relationships;  friends, coworkers, neighbors, bosses, employees, service people, vendors, relatives, health care practitioners, teachers, mentors – anyone you connect with and have a personal or professional relationship with.

When this area of the Bagua is in balance, you will experience all of your relationships as a flowing dance of give and take, fulfillment, upliftment, and inspiration; including kindness, generosity, and compassion.

Enhance this area when you would like to be in an intimate relationship with your soul partner; improve the relationship you are already in; have happy, fulfilling relationships with all of the people you connect with in your life; have a healthier relationship with yourself.

Ways to enhance this area of the Bagua: add artwork that represents love and romance; objects in pairs (not PEARS! One women upon hearing about pairs of objects, installed ceramic Pears in her home!) – candles, pictures, flowers, statues; colors of red, white and pink; mementos from romantic getaways;  display a favorite photograph of you and your partner, this will support the happiness and longevity of your relationship. Because this area of the Bagua is also an Earth element, you can enhance and accessorize with objects or artwork in earth tones, especially skin color tones – which are warm, inviting and sensual.

Bagua story from one of my clients: My client was feeling very lonely. Her husband had a job that took him overseas for long periods of time. In her bedroom which was also the Love, Marriage and Relationship part of her home, were two paintings of a woman dining alone at a café in Paris looking out into the distance with a forlorn look on her face. WOW! I told her to replace those with nicely framed photographs of her and her husband during a happy time in their life. And voila! Within a few months her husband’s job title changed and he no longer had to travel and was happily home every night for dinner!

One more story about me! I had just completed my Feng Shui training at the Western School of Feng Shui. One of my deepest intentions and desires at that time was to meet my soul partner and be in a committed intimate relationship AND get married! I had one of my Feng Shui colleagues come over to Feng Shui my home. It is always a good idea to have someone else Feng Shui your home as it is so hard to “see the forest from the trees” in your own home. She knew my intention beforehand. One of the first things she noticed and commented on were multiple photographs of my Indian Spiritual teacher hung throughout my home. She felt that could be a HUGE turn off to any prospective new partner and she recommended that I take all of them down except one of my favorite ones. I promptly did as she suggested and guess what? Within 2 months I met my life partner where I worked and we are married and have been together for 20 years now! Yes, Feng Shui works!!!

Creativity & Children

I Ching Trigram –“Tui” (Shui) – JOYOUS LAKE

Element – Metal

Teaching – PLEASURE, JOY, CREATIVITY.

This area of the Bagua is about encouraging ourselves and others to be creatively expressive. As I allow the energy of this Gua to share its wisdom, I am reminded that the creative spirit is delicate and needs admiration and gentle encouragement to fully flower. Because sometimes as children we were shut down by harmful remarks directed at our expression of creativity, so now as adults, we are reticent about letting this part of us come out and play again. So as you explore expressing more creativity in your life, be gentle and kind with yourself. Experiment with curiosity and beginners mind and allow the fun, whimsical and sometimes messiness and chaotic nature of creativity to be expressed through you.

Creativity in your life can be expressed in many different ways. It can show up in how you decorate your home, arrange furniture, hang artwork and how you combine colors and fabrics;  when you are cooking, trying out different recipes and playing with new ingredients to see how they pare together; how you dress and accessorize with jewelry, scarves, hats and shawls. How you set the table for dinner can be a work of art with a handmade centerpiece and flowers, table runners, placemats, candles and music. You see, creativity is not just relegated to the known world of painting, sculpture and writing books. It is also about how much of yourself you are willing to bring into your life. And putting aside for a while the seriousness of being an adult and allow the childlike part of you to come out and play and experiment with curiosity without having deadlines and the need for perfection.

This area also speaks to being playful like children and not being afraid to try new things. This Gua also represents your relationship with your own children and your inner child.

Enhance this area of your home if you would like to increase your creativity or would like to loosen up and be more playful; you have a new project; work through any creative blocks; become pregnant; have more joy and fulfillment, or improve your relationship with your children and inner child.

Ways you can enhance this area of the Bagua: Introduce pastel colors, white or metal objects; rocks, stones, round or oval shapes; whimsical, playful items; artwork or images that inspire your creativity; display your own or your children’s creations: collages, paintings, drawings or sculptures; toys, dolls or stuffed animals.

This teaching is an invitation to PLAY!

Mapping the Bagua

One of the most exciting tools used in Feng Shui is the Bagua. It connects the quality of life; health, happiness, prosperity with physical structures; homes and offices.

The Bagua map is based on the I Ching – The Book of Changes, which is an ancient Chinese guide to right action.

The word Bagua literally means 8 Trigrams, which are the 8 main building blocks of the I Ching. Each trigram is associated with an important aspect of life that has a rich assortment of meanings and associations.

The Bagua map will show you where and how the chi or energy of your Health, Prosperity, Fame and Reputation, Love, Creativity, Mentors, Helpful People and Travel, Career and your Journey through Life,  Knowledge and Wisdom flows or gets stuck throughout your home.

Working with the Bagua map gives every part of your environment special importance and meaning.

There’s Nowhere to Hide in Feng Shui!
Mapping Your Home

You can apply the Bagua Map to any building, parcel of land, room, or piece of furniture. Right now we will focus on mapping your home.

Imagine a bird’s eye view of your home with a view you’d have looking down from up above.  Determine the overall shape of your structure, including attached garages, porches, room additions, and decks.

  1. Draw the structure of the main floor of your home w/ front door facing the bottom of page.
  2. Draw in the rooms and label them.
  3. With a different color, draw a box around the whole structure, it should be a square or rectangle.
    • If you have an L, T, or U shape home, part of the box or Bagua map, will be OUTSIDE of your drawing of the structure.
  4. Divide the Bagua map into 9 squares, like tic tac toe board.
    • Do not be concerned with where the rooms are as compared to the Bagua squares.
    • One room may include more than one Bagua section.
    • 2 or 3 small rooms end up in 1 Bagua section.
  5. Label each Bagua section you can abbreviate each section, for example: Health and Family would be H&F.

Notice which rooms and areas of your house fall into which sections of the Bagua Map.

What room or area is located in each Bagua area?

Is it organized?

Are there possessions that you especially love or dislike?

Do you see a correlation between what’s located in each area and YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE?

Do you have any areas missing from the Bagua?

This can be a VERY REVEALING process.

You may find that a Bagua area matches up with a place of harmony in your life or challenging area.

A Chinese Proverb to integrate this teaching:

When there is light in the soul, there is beauty in the person;

When there is beauty in the person, there is harmony in the home;

When there is harmony in the home, there is honor in the nation;

When there is honor in the nation, there is peace in the world.

Helpful People and Travel

I Ching trigram – Ch’ien – HEAVEN

When I sink deeply into the energy of Helpful People and Travel, this is what speaks to me. When this area is in balance and harmony you will notice that people show up in your life as helpful angels. You could be at the grocery store and a person who works there magically appears at your side when you have a question, or you are having issues with your phone or internet and you get a technical person on the phone right away who speaks English so clearly that you can understand every word he is saying, and the man who cleans your carpets washes your screens and area rugs for free. Those are the little day to day occurrences of Helpful People.

The bigger more bodacious helpers are when you are starting a new business and the perfect web designer shows up via a friend of a friend, your old colleague who happens to have professional editing experience offers to edit all of your copy and the perfect, loyal, trustworthy employees are referred to you from an old client.

You are moving into a new house and your old neighbor knows the perfect, reliable, organized and reasonable movers. The new house needs painting and your co-worker knows the best painter who not only does a great job but has awesome creative ideas about color, texture and design and gets the job done quickly and for an obscenely low fee!

This area also holds the energy for your spiritual beliefs and the relationship to your unseen helpers; spiritual teachers or mentors who have offered guidance on your journey, including life-changing books you have read.

Touched by the divine experience of synchronicity, you find yourself standing in the right place at the right time, or meeting the right person at just the right moment. These people magically show up to help you with a project or with insights and inspiration for the next stage of your journey.

This is the area that brings you experiences of being positively changed by a helpful person or special place.

When the Helpful People and Travel area is in balance you experience your life as HEAVEN ON EARTH.

Enhance this area in your home if you would like your life to run more smoothly; to be treated with more respect; find the right people to help you with projects; attract clients, customers, mentors, teachers, employees, vendors and meet new friends; connect more deeply with your spiritual beliefs; receive inspiration and guidance; experience more synchronicity and always be in the right place at the right time.

This area is also related to Travel. Are there places you would love to visit? How is your commute to work? Where are you going in your life?

Here are some suggestions on how you can enhance this area of the Bagua:

Bring in colors of silver and gray; statues or photos of spiritual figures that you feel connected to; bells or chimes to call in helpful people; photos and objects that represent real people in your life that have helped you; a silver box with your requests for assistance written on pieces of paper; inspirational books that have supported you on your journey; photos, artwork or books that represent places you would like to travel to.
